Reviving a heritage home comes with its share of unique challenges, especially one designed by renowned architect Kenneth Henry Bill Oliphant. Vanessa Hawes and Paul Tilse’s transformation of the Hobart Avenue Residence, however, rises to the occasion — presenting a masterclass in harmony brought together by joyful layers of colour.
Never content to adhere to any one playbook, Hawes and Tilse’s bold design borrows and blends from a wide range of inspirations, creating a space that feels truly curated. Light-toned herringbone floors are paired with ornate ceiling battens, and a range of hand-picked pieces such as the India Mandhavi ‘Jardin D’Interieur’ rug, building layers of elements that complement rather than clash.
Tying this space together is the exquisite use of Calacatta Vagli Oro marble. The soft grey veins and warm golden undertones harmonise beautifully with the curved bronze of the kitchen range hood and RBW Gala pendant light. This motif is carried throughout the cottage into the family room and bathrooms, where custom Calacatta Vagli Oro subway tiles and Santa Margharita Fior Di Pesco slabs are used to create a consistent foundation of colour throughout the home.
From the colour pallet, down to texture and material accents, the space preserves much of its original Art Deco features while adding a modern edge. Striking a delicate balance between preserving the past without becoming stuck in tradition, the Hobart Avenue renovation is a singular example of a million details executed to perfection.
